1.502 kg, 6 pieces. $70/kg. Aragonite from Sukabumi, West Java, Indonesia — radiating fans and rosettes of bladed white crystals, roughly 2.5 to 4 inches across. Each piece is a spray growing outward from a common base, with long wedge-shaped blades reaching an inch or more and finer crystals crowding in around them. Several are broad open fans; two are steeper, more upright forms with a single dominant blade rising above the group. Color runs colorless to milky white, clear enough to see through at many of the tips and cloudier toward the bases, with a bright glassy lustre on fresh faces and a softer satin sheen where surfaces are etched. Light tan clay sits in some of the recesses. Aragonite is calcium carbonate — it reads as quartz at a glance but is considerably softer at 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale, and should be kept away from acids and abrasive cleaning.
