Magnetite is an iron oxide and the most strongly magnetic mineral found in nature. These pieces are granular crusts rather than single crystals: dense masses of fine intergrown grains, dark grey to near-black, with a bright metallic sparkle across every broken surface where light catches the individual grain faces. The forms are irregular and sculptural — ridged, pitted, and botryoidal, with open cavities and knobbed projections. Scattered brassy grains of associated sulfide minerals sit in the surface of several pieces.
Pieces range from roughly 1 to 3 inches.
The material is strongly attracted to a magnet — a magnet will cling to a piece and hold there against gravity, including on a narrow edge. Note that the material is not itself magnetized: it will not pick up iron on its own. This is normal for magnetite and worth explaining to a customer who expects otherwise.
Identified by field testing rather than laboratory analysis: strong magnetic response and a black streak, both consistent with magnetite and inconsistent with the minerals it is most often confused with.
