Chabazite from the Deccan basalt quarries of Madhya Pradesh, India. Chabazite is one of the less commonly offered Indian zeolites and rarely comes through in lots this consistent.
The crystals are warm salmon to apricot orange, wedge- and rhomb-shaped, glassy where light catches the faces and showing fine internal striations. They sit scattered and clustered across a thick white matrix with a soft fibrous surface, and several pieces break away to a dark green and black basalt underside — the color contrast between the orange crystals, the chalk-white bed, and the deep green rock is what makes this material carry across a display shelf.
Coverage varies by piece. Some are densely crusted edge to edge in crystal; others show open fields of white matrix with crystals scattered like blossoms across it. Both presentations are represented in this lot.
The white matrix layer is a fine-grained zeolite, not identified further without testing.
Pieces run 1.5 to 5.75 inches, from a small thumbnail-plus up to a cabinet piece.
Care note: chabazite is soft at 4 to 5 on the Mohs scale, and like other zeolites it can dehydrate and lose lustre with prolonged heat or direct sunlight. Do not tumble, scrub, or ultrasonic clean. The white matrix is friable — handle by the basalt rather than the crystallized face where possible.
