Cavansite from the basalt quarries near Pune, Maharashtra, India.
Each piece is a section of reddish-brown basalt with an open cavity lined in white zeolite crystals, and vivid blue cavansite rosettes seated in the lining. The blue is unusually saturated — a deep sky to cyan blue that comes from vanadium in the structure — and the rosettes have the fine radiating bladed habit the species is known for. Cavity linings vary across the lot: some are dense white bladed zeolite, others fine sparkling druzy, and several pieces carry clear white bladed crystals alongside the cavansite. Rosette size varies from small accent clusters to one prominent bloom near half an inch across.
Pieces are approximately 2 inches in height.
Cavansite is soft, roughly 3 to 4 on the Mohs scale, and the rosettes are delicate — handle by the matrix, keep pieces from contacting each other in storage, and do not clean with brushes, ultrasonic units, or acids. Dust with compressed air only.
Natural and untreated — no dyeing, coating, or stabilizing, as with everything we carry.
