Calcite from Java, Indonesia. The crystals are white to nearly water-clear, most of them sharp scalenohedral points — the classic dogtooth habit — with blockier rhombohedral forms filling in between them. Several clusters have grown in a radiating, flower-like spray; others are plate-like, with points standing up off a crystallized base.
The surfaces vary in a way that reads well in person: some faces are glassy and transparent enough to see straight through the crystal, others have a soft frosted or satin finish, and one piece carries a fine sugary druze across its underside.
Pieces range from 2.25 to 6 inches.
Please note that calcite is a soft mineral at 3 on the Mohs scale, softer than it looks — these clusters have the clarity and point structure of quartz but are considerably more delicate. Calcite also cleaves in three directions, so points can chip if knocked. Keep it out of direct contact with harder specimens, and away from acids and household cleaners, which will etch the surfaces.
