Azurite is a copper carbonate, and the deep blue is the copper itself rather than any inclusion or coating. The color in this parcel runs from an intense electric blue in the smaller crystals and druzy surfaces to a blue so saturated it reads nearly black in the larger blades, opening back up to blue when light passes through a thin edge. Several pieces show the sharp bladed habit azurite is known for, with striated faces and a bright, almost metallic lustre where the crystal faces catch light. Others are radiating intergrown clusters of shorter blades.
Pieces range from thumbnail to miniature size. One crystal sits on pale carbonate matrix. Another carries a velvety green coating of malachite along two faces — azurite alters to malachite over geologic time, and the two together on one piece is a well-known and collectible pairing.
