Agatized fossil coral from Java, Indonesia — slabs of ancient colonial coral in which the original skeleton has been replaced by agate, preserving each polyp cup as a small flower-shaped ring with radiating ridges.
The agate runs from translucent grey-blue through honey and amber to deep golden brown, with cream and ochre outlining the individual cups and occasional touches of rust red. Some cups hold a fine glitter of tiny crystals. The slabs vary across the lot: some are cool grey-blue and glow when held to the light, others are warm honey-gold, and one is more opaque, packed edge to edge with ochre-and-cream cups. The yellow and rust tones typically come from iron staining.
Each slab has cut and polished faces framed by its natural rind, a pale chalky border where the coral structure still stands in relief. The slabs measure about 3¼ to 6 inches.
The rind is softer and more porous than the agate, so handle the edges with care.
